TAPIO WIRKKALA

The Finnish master of design Tapio Wirkkala ( 1915-1985 ) was unsurpassed in his skilful use of the most diverse materials for household and artware.
Glass, wood, ceramics, porcelain, plastics and silver – all took shape in his hands.

Before any article was ready for production, he studied its ergonomy meticulously, and of numerous products there exist prototypes made by Wirkkala himself.

Tapio Wirkkala received abundant recognition for his work as a designer both in Finland and abroad, including numerous Grand Prix -prizes at the Milan Triennales, as well as the gold medal of the President of Italy at the Faenza International Ceramics Competition in the years 1967-1973.

Tapio Wirkkala attained the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in England in 1971. He was awarded the degree of Doctor honoris causa at the London Royal College of Art in 1971 and the title of Academician in 1972.
